How to Read a Peptide COA (and Spot a Fake)
A Certificate of Analysis is the one document that tells you whether the vial in your hand is what the label claims. In an unregulated market, it is also the document most often faked, reused, or quietly left out. If you buy peptides for research, learning to read a COA is the single most useful skill you can build. Here is how to do it.
What a COA actually is
A Certificate of Analysis is a lab report on a specific batch of product. A real one names the compound, states its purity, confirms its identity, and ties all of that to a batch or lot number and a date. It is issued by a lab, not written by the seller. That last point matters more than any other.
A COA answers two separate questions. Is this the right molecule? And how pure is it? Good paperwork answers both. Weak paperwork answers one and hopes you do not notice the other.
The five things to check
1. Identity, by mass spectrometry. Look for a mass spec (MS) result. Mass spectrometry confirms the molecule is what the label says. Without it, you have a purity number for something that might not even be the right compound.
2. Purity, by HPLC. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) measures how much of the sample is the actual compound versus everything else. You want to see a purity percentage, usually 98 percent or higher for research-grade material. A claim of "high purity" with no HPLC number behind it is marketing, not data.
3. The compound name and CAS number. Cross-check the CAS number on the COA against a reference. The CAS number is a unique identifier for a chemical. If it does not match what you ordered, you are looking at the wrong molecule, and this is where a wrong molecule shows up first.
4. Batch or lot number, and does it match the vial. A real COA is tied to one batch. The batch number on the report should match the batch number on the vial in your hand. If the report has no batch number, or the number does not match, the document does not describe your product.
5. The issuing lab, named and reachable. A trustworthy COA names the lab that ran it and gives a report number you can verify. An in-house result from the seller's own bench is not the same thing. An outside lab has no reason to inflate the numbers.
How fakes are built
Most fake or misleading COAs fall into a few patterns. Once you know them, they are easy to catch.
The reused document. One COA from one good batch, attached to every order for a year. Tell: no batch-specific date, or a batch number that never changes.
The in-house claim. Purity and identity "confirmed" by the seller, with no third-party lab named. Tell: no lab, no report number, nothing you can check.
The half report. A purity percentage with no identity test, or an identity test with no purity number. Tell: only one of the two questions gets answered.
The unverifiable number. A report number printed on the page that leads nowhere. Tell: you contact the lab and they have no record of it.
How to verify one
Reading the COA is step one. Verifying it is step two, and it is the step most people skip.
If the report lists a lab and a report number, contact the lab directly and ask them to confirm the report is real and matches the batch. A legitimate lab can do this. If the seller resists giving you a verifiable report, or the lab has no record, treat the document as unverified, which is the same as no document at all.
A quick field check before you buy
Before money changes hands, run the vendor and the paperwork through a short list. Does a batch-specific COA exist? Is it from an independent lab? Does it show both HPLC purity and MS identity? Does the batch number match the vial? Can you verify the report number? If any answer is no, you have found your reason to wait.
